Interesting Facts History of the Great Temple of the Greek Goddess Athena Parthenon

When things get better, maybe you can consider visiting a beautiful country full of historical and cultural values, namely Greece. Countries that are included in the European continent are not as popular as Paris. However, Greece offers a priceless beauty of scenery, history and culture.

Haven't been to Greece if you haven't been to the Parthenon. Like the word, the temple built for the goddess Athena is a very famous Greek landmark. The classic building of this temple is often enshrined in camera lenses or made into a souvenir Greek mascot.

Located in Athens, on the hill complex of the Acropolis, the Parthenon towers over the city. At night, the Parthenon and the Acropolis light up in a flash of light that can be seen from all over the city. This square-shaped building was built in the 5th century BC by Callicrates and Ictinus, which was intended as a replacement for the old temple that had stood before.

The Parthenon or "Temple of the Virgin" is dedicated to the goddess Athena. No wonder if the temple is also built a large statue of Athena along with various reliefs depicting various scenes.

The architecture of the Parthenon is classified as Doric-style architecture, characterized by columns surrounding the Parthenon and decorative metopes placed above the columns to create a kind of ornamental border. The Parthenon is visually appealing with its white marble construction, large sizes, and varied carvings.

At that time, a measure of the value of money could be converted through talent, which is a scale used in some areas of the world in Old Testament Bible times. Well, the dress that complemented the statue of Athena at that time was made of gold worth 1,000 talents. Meanwhile, for the temple itself is estimated to cost 10 thousand talents or 10 times more expensive than making a statue of the Goddess Athena.

If it is adjusted to the value of currency in modern times, the statue of the Goddess Athena, which was once made, is now worth around Rp. 1.4 trillion. Meanwhile, specifically for the temple, it has spent around Rp. 14 trillion. In ancient times, such a large cost could be equivalent to 462--500 large warships.

Directed by the Athenian statesman Pericles , the Parthenon was built by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates under the supervision of the phidian sculptors . Work began in 447 BC, and the building itself was completed in 438. That same year, a large gold and ivory statue of Athena, created by Phidias for the interior, was dedicated. Work on the exterior decoration of the building continued until 432 BC.

The Parthenon embodies a number of remarkable architectural enhancements, which combine to give the building a plastic and sculptural appearance. Among them are the upward curvature of the base along the ends and repeated in entablature; invisible and smooth convexity (entasis) of the column as the diameter decreases towards the top; and the thickening of the four corner columns to counteract the thinning effect seen at certain angles to the sky.

Although located in the city center, to reach the Parthenon I need to hike for 30 minutes. Arriving at the gate you can immediately line up to buy tickets. Because Athens has many historical buildings that attract tourists from various parts of the world to come, the Greek government launched a multi-combo ticket at a price of 30 Euros or approximately Rp.491,329, -. With this combo ticket we can visit the Parthenon and many other sites such as Hadrian's Library, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, and the temple of Zeus.
