East Flores hit by flash floods

A resident witnessed flash floods that damaged settlements in Waiburak Village, East Adonara District, East Flores, NTT, Sunday (4/4/2021). The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that 44 people died due to flash floods and landslides in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The note was updated on Sunday (4/4) at 15.00 WIB.

Damianus explained that the impact of flash floods in Waiwerang and its surroundings was very severe due to the flow of mud which brought along logs and large stones that hit residents' settlements. As a result, besides washing away residents, houses, vehicles and other goods were also carried away by the flood, and the access to the bridge that connected the two regions was also cut off.

Meanwhile, in Waiburak Village, East Adonara District, two residents were still reported missing. A total of four injured residents have been treated at the local puskesmas. It was also reported that the current conditions in the field were still raining accompanied by strong winds.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Raditya Jati said the casualties were spread across three villages. BNPB and a number of state institutions are still updating data from the field. BNPB also recorded material losses. Until now, BNPB has reported that residential settlements were swept away by floods, dozens of houses in Lamanele Village were buried in mud, and bridges in Waiburak Village were broken.

In addition, his party has coordinated with the local health center to be ready to provide health services for survivors.

As previously reported, dozens of residents in Nelelamadike Village, Ileboleng District, East Flores, NTT, were buried by landslides while they were at home, East Flores Deputy Regent Agus Boli said he had asked the East Flores BPBD and various parties to go to the field to evacuate the victims . Landslides caused by heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that occurred from Saturday (3/4/2021) to Sunday. Apart from landslides, heavy rains also caused a number of areas in the area to be flooded.

The local government is working to deal with the affected victims through the establishment of a post to ensure disaster emergency handling.

Residents in Waiwerang, Adonara Timur Subdistrict and its surroundings in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, have worked together to build an emergency bridge to support the evacuation process of the victims of the flash flood that occurred. The emergency bridge was built by residents after the main bridge access connecting the Waiwerang and Waiburak areas was completely cut off, hit by flash floods in the form of mudflows carrying wood and large stones.

Although the conditions in the field area are still difficult, efforts to find and evacuate victims are currently continuing by relying on human resources, both from the local government and residents. The survivors, who only had clothes on their bodies, were given emergency treatment in the form of health services, food, rest areas, and so on.

Currently the local government together with the Regent, TNI, Polri and related agencies have held limited meetings related to banjir bandang. One of them is the establishment of an emergency response post.

The victims who live in the local area are expected to be vigilant and to be ready, because the conditions in the field are currently still raining accompanied by strong winds.
