Feel the Sensation of Staying at the Underground Hotel InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland

This five-star hotel located in Songjiang City is about 35 kilometers from Shanghai City. Adopting an unconventional design, the hotel is built on the side of an 88 meter high quarry with 18 floors including two underwater.

The hotel has a roof covered with lush green flora and fauna blending in with its still green surroundings. The design is environmentally friendly with an energy efficient lighting system.

This hotel has 337 rooms which have curved balconies overlooking the waterfall so that hotel guests are invited to heaven on earth.

The hotel building structure was designed by the architectural firm Atkins and JADE + QA. One of the development companies, Atkins, is a company that also handles the construction of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai.

The position of the hotel which is inside the quarry pit makes the scenery around the hotel so amazing. The cliffs and trees that surround the hotel plus the lake and waterfall in it will certainly make visitors feel more comfortable staying at the hotel.

The concept and facade design company for this project is JADE + QA, led by Martin Jochman, who designed the concept while working with ATKINS and in 2013 set up his own practice in Shanghai and continues to work on this project directly for developer Shimao with his own. owns the JADE + QA studio. The local architectural firm is ECADI (East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.), which is responsible for design development, construction documents, structural design and MEP. The interior design companies are CCD (Cheng Chung Design) and AB Concept. The lighting design consultant is Illuminate Lighting Design.

The hotel has 18 floors, 16 of which are below ground level including two projected underwater floors; two floors above the 88m deep mine. The abandoned mine was partially filled with water to create an artificial lake. The hotel is designed with an "S" shape using a convex to concave shape. The architect's vision is one of sequential hanging gardens that will produce the effect of green hills stretching below the mine surface. Both the quarry rock face and the guest room block wings project around the atrium inside the hotel. The vertical atrium made of glass will (above the hotel) is meant to symbolize an artificial "waterfall".

The project will include facilities for extreme sports, a visitor center and a five-star hotel with several underwater rooms. The hotel has 337 rooms as well as conference facilities for 1,000 people, a grand ballroom and a restaurant and cafe on the ground floor above the hotel. There are two underwater floors, the lower one featuring the MEP installation and the upper one with a guest room and restaurant overlooking the aquarium with a depth of five meters.

Rooms are expected to be priced at a minimum of US $ 500 per night, however, in 2020 rooms will be priced in the range of US $ 360.
