The Background of the Bomb Explosion in Makassar

The Background of the Bomb Explosion in Makassar

A BOOM explosion rocked Indonesia again. The bomb explosion occurred in front of the Makassar Cathedral Church , Jalan Kartini, Makassar City, South Sulawesi, Sunday (28/3/2021). The Makassar bombing occurred at around 10:28 a.m. local time.

The perpetrators of the bombing were said to be two observers of terrorism related to the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) group. The incident, according to observers, was carried out as "an act of revenge for the arrest of dozens of suspected terrorists" by the Indonesian Police's Anti-Terror Detachment 88 and was suspected of being an act of amaliyah or an action leading up to the month of Ramadan. Even so, the Police are still unable to confirm the connection between the massive arrests of suspected terrorists and the events that coincided with the Easter celebration. However, the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) said it would continue to trace the existence of the remaining active JAD cells in South Sulawesi.

Terrorism observer from the University of Malikussaleh (Unimal) Aceh, Al Chaidar, believes the perpetrators of the bombing in front of the Makassar Cathedral Church were part of the ISIS-affiliated Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) network. His analysis is based on bombing targets similar to incidents in Surabaya, East Java, in 2018 and Jolo, Philippines, in 2019: both targeting the Catholic church. Al Chaidar suspected that the attack was a revenge from the JAD group for the arrest of dozens of its members and the killing of two of its group by the Indonesian Police's Special Anti-terrorism Detachment 88 in early January in Makassar.

The recruitment of JAD groups in Indonesia was very fast and the numbers were many times over. He gave an example, if in one month they were able to recruit two to three new sympathizers, now there are dozens of people. For this reason, Al Chaidar assessed that the massive arrests carried out by Densus 88 Anti-terror Polri only caused trouble for the security apparatus but were not effective enough to stem the massive trans-national ideology of Wahabi Takfiri.

What the government must do immediately is to intensify the counter-discourse of the trans-national Wahhabi ideology in Indonesia.

Muhammad Syauqillah and Al Chaidar agreed that the number of members of the JAD group in South Sulawesi was still quite large, even though dozens of people had been arrested by Densus 88 Anti-terror. So it does not rule out further attacks.

His party continues to appeal to the public to continue carrying out activities as usual. He invited Christians, Catholics to enter the post-post period to carry out their worship, as well as Muslims before the holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr quietly.

The National Police Chief also asked the people not to be provoked. If it is a period of frightening people, please report it and immediately act on it. In addition, Sigit hopes that the participation of the mass media does not present news that can affect security stability.
