Indonesia Becomes Champion of the Three Largest Rice Producing Countries in the World

Rice is one of the most important staple foods in the world. This statement is especially true in the Asian Continent, where rice is the staple food for the majority of the population, especially among the lower middle class of society. The Asian continent is also home to farmers who produce about 90% of the world's total rice production.

One of the largest rice producing provinces in Indonesia, namely East Java. The amount of GKG produced in East Java during January-April 2020 reached 4.20 million tons. Meanwhile, according to the prognosis for January-April 2021, the amount of dry unhulled rice produced in this province is estimated to reach 4.98 million tons.

Director General of Food Crops of the Ministry of Agriculture, Suwandi, said that the largest rice producing areas in Indonesia are still on the island of Java, namely Central Java, East Java, West Java and other islands in Sulawesi, namely South Sulawesi. The four regions have a harvested area of more than 1 million hectares with each producing more than 5 million tonnes of rice.

East Java Province, with a harvest area of 1,754,380 hectares, is capable of producing 9,944,538 tons of paddy, or the equivalent of 5,712,597 tons of rice. East Java Province succeeded in replacing Central Java which was previously ranked first. Second, Central Java Province, with a harvest area of 1,666,931 hectares, produces 9,489,165 tons of paddy rice, or the equivalent of 5,428,721 tons of rice.

Kemdian West Java Province, with a harvest area of 1,586,889 hectares and produces 9,016,773 tons of paddy rice or the equivalent of 5,180,202 tons of rice. Fourth, South Sulawesi Province, with a harvest area of 976,258 hectares which produces 4,708,465 tons of paddy, or the equivalent of 2,687,970 tons of rice.

Indonesia is an agricultural country that has agricultural land which is expected to fulfill all the basic needs of society as a whole. This does not guarantee that a country can be free from imports, especially from the economic sector itself.

However, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized that the government will not import rice at least until the middle of this year. Although rice imports did not take place, the polemic regarding rice imports has soared and sparked unrest among farmers. As a result, the price of the object in question, namely unhulled rice, has decreased significantly.

The obstacle for the domestic rice industry is limited equipment so that production is not optimal. Therefore, the government should also help in revitalizing machines to help local producers.

It is hoped that the government will not import rice, because imported rice has the potential to reduce prices, and in the end farmers will be depressed and disadvantaged.
