Causes, Losses, and Victims of Pertamina Indramayu Fire

The oil refinery owned by PT Pertamina in Indramayu caught fire on Monday, March 29, 2021 in the morning. The PT Pertamina RU VI Balongan oil refinery in Indramayu, West Java is a state asset that plays an important role in the Indonesian economy. As one of the oil refineries owned by PT Pertamina, the RU VI Balongan oil refinery plays a role in meeting the national demand for fuel oil (BBM). Pertamina Balongan oil refinery is also one of the largest oil refineries in Southeast Asia.

In its vision, the Balongan Refinery is ready to become the leading oil refinery in Asia by 2025. The main business activity of the Balongan oil refinery is processing crude oil into petroleum, non-fuel and petrochemical products.

The Balongan refinery processes raw materials in the form of Duri and Minas crude oil, which comes from Riau Province. The refinery, which was built in 1990, started operating since 1994 in Indramayu, West Java.

The products produced by the Balongan refinery include Premium, Pertamax, Pertamax Plus, Solar, Pertamina DEX, Kerosene or kerosene, LPG, and Propylene which are premium plastic raw materials.

Previously, on Monday (4/2/2019), one of the Pertamina EP Balongan areas had a fire. However, Pertamina EP confirmed that the fire did not occur at the refinery but in the working area of ​​the Pertamina EP Asset 3 Oil and Gas Transportation (OGT) facility.
PT Pertamina has revealed that the fire incident at the Balongan refinery occurred in three tank units on Monday (29/3) in the morning. Pertamina ensures that the supply of fuel oil (BBM) will be maintained and urges the public not to worry.

PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional Subholding Refining & Petrochemical Corporate Secretary Ifki Sukarya explained that the fuel processed at the Balongan Refinery is a supply for the Jakarta and surrounding areas.

Currently, Sukarya continued, what is being done is to focus on handling refinery fires extinguishing. For this reason, Pertamina also mobilized assistance from other refinery units, namely RU IV Cilacap. The current losses cannot be estimated.

A total of five people were seriously injured, 15 people were lightly injured, and three people were missing due to the fuel oil storage tank (BBM) owned by PT Pertamina in Balongan Village, Balongan District, Indramayu Regency, West Java, experiencing a fire on Monday (29/03) early. days, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) in a written statement.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Raditya Jati, stated that 912 residents were also evacuated in various places. He detailed that 220 residents took refuge in the GOR of the Pertamina Bumi Patra Complex, 300 in the Pendopo of the Indramayu Regent's Office and 392 in the Indramayu Islamic Center Building.

Meanwhile, for the handling of the victims, the victim who suffered from burns is currently being treated at the Balongan Hospital.

If explained, there are three Pertamina refineries with a sizable investment. Namely, the development of the Balikpapan refinery requires US $ 6.9 billion in funding, the Cilacap refinery at US $ 8.3 billion and the Tuban refinery at US $ 15.7 billion. While the Balongan refinery in 2020, there was a finalization of investment from Taiwan reaching US $ 12 billion.

Regarding the cause of this fire, the Head of the West Java Regional Police Inspector General Pol Ahmad Dofiri said that there were reports of indications of leaks in the burning oil tank pipe at the RU VI Balongan oil refinery.
